US states with the highest divorce rates revealed in a new study – is yours on the list?

United States, separation of couples.

While divorce rates are falling across America, some states are still seeing marriages end in high numbers, according to a new study.

The divorce lawyers at DivorceLawyers.ca collected data from the US Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey to determine which states had the highest number of divorces per capita — and there were some shocking findings.

While many may believe that highly populated and liberal states may have the highest divorce rates, rural states are actually where more married couples seem to be calling it quits.

Alaska was the state with the highest number of divorces per capita in 2023, according to the data, with a combined divorce rate of 10, meaning 10 out of every 1,000 people in the state got divorced that year.

Advocates theorize that “long, harsh winters and limited daylight hours can contribute to seasonal depression and strain relationships” in the sparsely populated state.

“For couples in remote locations, seek support even if personal resources are limited,” urged Deepa Tailor, a divorce attorney at DivorceLawyers. “There are many online resources available, from virtual counseling and relationship workshops, to books and worksheets aimed at helping couples deal with their problems.”

Meanwhile, Wyoming came in second, with a divorce rate of 9.75 per 1,000 residents in 2023.

Nevada wasn’t far behind, with 9.3 out of every 1,000 residents getting divorced in the past 12 months.

Delaware, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky rounded out the top 10 states with the highest divorce rates.

The attorneys at DivorceLawyers did not disclose where New York state ranked on the list, but the 2021 Survey of American Communities, released by the U.S. Census Bureau, found that Massachusetts had the nation’s lowest divorce rate per capita .

According to separate data released by the National Institutes of Health, almost half of all American marriages end in divorce.

About 41% of first marriages do not last a lifetime, while 60% of second marriages end in divorce.
